“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”
Romans 12:18
The above scripture addresses YOUR behavior, not the behavior of anyone else.
In an era of intense superpower rivalry, few events carry as much weight as a face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the United States and China.
When President Donald Trump stepped onto Chinese soil in May 2026 for his high-stakes state visit with President Xi Jinping, the world watched closely—not just for policy breakthroughs, but for what the encounter revealed about power, diplomacy, and the human dynamics shaping our global future.
This was more than another summit. It was a carefully choreographed display of pageantry and pragmatism, filled with symbolic gestures, business deals, and pointed rhetoric.
Yet beneath the handshakes and headlines lies a deeper question: How do we navigate competition between nations, while upholding timeless principles of wisdom, integrity, and peace?
In this study, we look at the key moments of the visit, explore contrasting American perspectives, separate verifiable outcomes from political spin, and—perhaps most uniquely—turn to the Bible to seek wisdom to illuminate what this moment means for leadership, truth, trade, and long-term stability in a fractured world.

From May 13 to 15, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump made a state visit to Beijing, China—his second to the country and the first by a sitting U.S. president in nearly a decade during his second term.

The two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping featured extensive bilateral meetings, a state banquet, high-level personal meetings, a visit to the historic cultural symbolism Temple of Heaven, a tour of the Zhongnanhai leadership compound, and an emphasis on reducing “miscalculation risks” between the U.S. and China.
Proactive summits that reduce “miscalculation risks” align with the biblical call to seek peace “as far as it depends on you,” even between rivals, because it focuses on sensible, real-world solutions, rather than isolation, abstract theories or ideals to maintain channels of communication.

The Temple of Heaven symbolism and cordial tone represent human efforts at harmony in a tense world.
Peacemaking here is not weakness but it is a deliberate choice to pursue harmony where feasible, showing how both leaders framed the summit as establishing “constructive strategic stability.”

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall;
But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
Proverbs 15:22
President Trump was accompanied by his business delegation including high-profile CEOs and executives such as
Elon Musk of Tesla and Tim Cook of Apple Inc. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who had not been invited initially, also flew to Alaska to board Air Force One and headed to China with Trump.
The final list of CEOs included:
Tim Cook (Apple) Larry Fink (BlackRock), Stephen A. Schwarzman (Blackstone) Kelly Ortberg (Boeing) Brian Sikes (Cargill) Chuck Robbins (Cisco) Jane Fraser (Citigroup) Citigroup (one of the few women in the business group) Jim Anderson (Coherent) Larry Culp (General Electric) David Solomon (Goldman Sachs) Jacob Thaysen (Illumina) Michael Miebach (Mastercard) Dina Powell (Meta) Sanjay Mehrotra (Micron) Jensen Huang (Nvidia) Cristiano Amon (Qualcomm) Elon Musk (Tesla/SpaceX) Ryan McInerney (Visa)
Unlike the other CEOs, Musk and Huang directly travelled with Trump on Air Force One.
President Trump’s Government/Official Delegation included
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was also part of the delegation, making him the first secretary of defense to accompany the US president on a state visit to China.
Other US government officials attending included Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Beau Harrison, Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel, Director of Communications Steven Cheung, the President’s Science and Tech Advisor Michael Kratsios, Speechwriting Advisor Ross Worthington, Oval Office Operations Director Walt Nauta and Chief of Protocol Monica Crowley. Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent joined the trip after having met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in South Korea.

The best, safest, and most successful decisions come from consulting a diverse group of trusted advisors rather than relying solely on your own understanding. Then you weigh the advice and evaluate the counsel against your core goals.
The Bible says…
“Where there is no counsel, the people fall;
But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
Proverbs 15:22
The above scripture clearly states that it is wise to seek counsel, but the Bible also says that it is necessary that you look to God to understand it. “Wisdom” ultimately comes from God, not man.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
James 1:5

Key topics discussed included trade, and tariffs, Taiwan, the ongoing situation in Iran, oil markets and technology cooperation.
Scripture repeatedly stresses integrity and fairness in economic exchanges—honest weights symbolize transparent, mutually beneficial deals, rather than manipulation.

President Trump described the visit as a “tremendous success” and “fantastic,” citing “great trade deals” for both countries, including a confirmed Chinese commitment for approximately 200 Boeing aircraft (with hints of more), agricultural purchases like soybeans, energy deals, and approvals for Nvidia AI chips to select Chinese firms.

President Xi framed it as a “milestone” for “constructive strategic stability.”
Analysts noted strong optics and incremental economic steps, rather than sweeping structural breakthroughs.

While the Bible celebrates productive work and wealth creation as gifts from God, it also warns against deceit in trade.
“But remember the Lord your God,
for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,….”
Deuteronomy 8:18
“A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a Just Weight is his delight.” Proverbs 11:1

GOP leaders praised the trip as effective leadership and deal-making that advanced American interests through engagement rather than isolation
They highlighted benefits for U.S. workers, farmers, and manufacturers from the announced purchases.
In an interview with Fox News Channel personality Sean Hannity Trump said: “It’s the two great countries. I call it the G-2. This is the G-2. I think it’ll go down as a very important moment in history.”

Former China director on the National Security Council Julian Gewirtz, who served under President Joe Biden, told the Washington Post reporters: “Xi has done something Chinese leaders have been working toward for decades—bringing an American president to Beijing as an undisputed peer. Xi used the opulent optics of this visit to make clear to the world that China and the United States are the two dominant, equally matched superpowers. There is no going back.”

Chinese media also praised the trip, with Global Times saying “Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for China-US relations” and that “The future of China-US relations is bright”.

Democrats, however had a perspective that was quite different.
Before the two leaders even met in Beijing, the Democrat view framed this visit by quoting something that Xi Pinjing introduced and endorsed in October of 2020. At that time Xi stated that “the East is rising and the West declining.” Xi made it clear at that time that he sees the U.S. as a declining power.
In 2023, Xi made remarks that “included this concept” during a speech to new Central Committee members. This speech was republished on January 1, 2025.

On January 1, 2025, Qiushi (求是), the Chinese Communist Party’s flagship theoretical journal, published a major commentary by Xi Jinping that prominently featured the phrase.
GlobalVoices clearly explained that the publication was a reprint of XiPinjing’s 2023 speech.
Fast forward to 2026

China’s Xi lauds ‘new positioning’ in ties with US-By Liz Lee, Xiuhao Chen and Mei Mei Chu-May 14, 20262:45 AM EDTUpdated May 14, 2026

According to Reuters, Xi said both leaders agreed that building a “constructive, strategically stable relationship” would guide ties in the next three years and beyond, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.
Xi described such ties as based primarily on cooperation but with measured competition for “a normal stability in which differences are controllable, and a lasting stability in which peace can be expected”, the ministry added.
Analysts said the reference to “constructive strategic stability” showed China was following gradations in relations that yield a framework for diplomacy in which it can manage multi-faceted ties with the United States.
Democrats viewed the visit as heavy on symbolism and CEO interests but light on substantive gains for everyday Americans, expressing skepticism about long-term impact on trade imbalances, Taiwan, or global tensions.
President Trump’s “fantastic deals” view is optimistic, but details on implementation remain pending, while the core issues on subsidies, IP, and Taiwan saw no major shifts.

The Bible does not dictate specific foreign policy but it does provide a framework of integrity, wisdom, peacemaking, and truth-seeking.
This visit illustrates nations navigating complexity—human efforts matter, yet they answer to timeless principles of justice and peace.
Both leaders’ positive framing serves diplomatic purposes, but faithful analysis requires separating fact from flourish—neither total triumph nor total failure.

President Trump invited Xi for a reciprocal visit to the White House in September. Xi called the summit a “milestone” that established a framework for “constructive strategic stability.”
Overall, it reflects managed competition rather than historic triumph or failure.
