Why Is This Important?

The line from Moscow to New York goes over Greenland.
Missiles, bombers, and air traffic headed at North America cross that airspace.
That is why the United States built a base in northwest Greenland in the first place.
Why Do Some People Still Seem To Be Confused?
Some people hear “permanent control over security” and think America now owns Greenland.
Others hear “Denmark kept the land” and think nothing happened. Both of those views are incorrect.
Neither of those statements line up with the signed agreement.
I previously wrote an article about this very situation and went into great detail about what was taking place. (You can find the link at the end of this article.)
The base is now called Pituffik Space Base. It is still the northernmost U.S. military base on earth. Pituffik was not invented last week.
Ice is also opening water that used to stay frozen.
Shipping routes past Greenland’s coast matter more than they did. Under the ice there are minerals used in phones, cars, and weapons.
Russia and China have been watching all of that.
That is why Greenland matters.
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, President Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed an agreement in New York at the United Nations. That agreement is public.
The agreement says the Kingdom of Denmark still has sovereignty. It says the people of Greenland have a right to self-determination. It is not a sale. It is not annexation. Greenland is still part of Denmark.
The same agreement gives the United States more room on the security side. America can expand Pituffik. It can add bases at Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig in the east. U.S. planes and ships get wide access.
Non-NATO countries cannot put their own military bases there unless all three parties agree. There is also a check on outside money in sensitive work, including resources. The agreement has no end date.
If Greenland ever becomes independent, the agreement says that the new state is supposed to stay with NATO and keep these defense terms.
President Trump is still calling it permanent control over security, and all other needs.
Denmark is still saying the land was not handed over.
It Is Not Finished Yet
We Have A Signed Agreement. We Do Not Yet Have A Finished Law.
They signed it. That is new since my first article. It still has to pass the parliaments in Denmark and in Greenland before it takes effect. So we have a signed agreement. We do not yet have a finished law.
In Conclusion
Last week we were waiting on a signing. On Tuesday they signed.
The next step is the two parliaments. Denmark has to vote. Greenland has to vote.
Until they do, it is signed, but it is not finished.
If you only argue about Trump, you will miss the map. If you only look at the map, you will miss the text of the agreement. Read both.
